Hormone Symptoms: Anxiety, Heart Palpitations

Do you ever feel your heart skip a beat and its not because you are gazing at your loved one? Heart palpitations can be a physical manifestation of anxiety. Did you know that hormonal imbalance could contribute to your anxiety?

Fluctuating levels of cortisol, thyroid and sex hormones such as progesterone and estrogen all affect anxiety levels. Too much or too little of these hormones can put your body in a stressful state which can further increase anxiety. Bio-identical progesterone has been used in menopausal and peri-menopausal women to lower anxiety.

Lifestyle choices are a critical factor in anxiety.

  • Choosing foods such as complex carbohydrates that boost the calming brain chemical serotonin may help. To boost your mood consider adding the following to your diet: chocolate, low-glycemic foods, vitamin B. Avoid simple carbohydrates and sugars.

  • Staying hydrated is also important because it has been shown that dehydration can cause mood changes.

  • Exercise is the most underutilized anti-anxiety medication available. Find a type of exercise you enjoy: yoga, pilates, zumba, tai chi, boxing, strength training….. the options are endless.

Talk to your doctor or give us a call to see how we can help you resolve some of the anxiety in your life
