The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new oral hormone therapy from TherapeuticsMDs for menopausal symptoms. The new drug, Bijuva, is an oral softgel capsule containing both Estradiol and Progesterone. This is the first combination medication approved by the FDA containing bio-identical hormones. Bio-identical hormones are chemically identical to human sex hormones. Bijuva will be available in 2 dosages: 0.5mg Estradiol/100mg Progesterone and 1mg Estradiol/100mg Progesterone. Bijuva should be available in the in the second quarter of 2019, so just around the corner.
The approval is a wonderful step to getting more FDA approved bio-identical hormone options to women. The limited dosages and oral estrogen form are 2 draw backs, but we are moving in the right direction. Compounding pharmacy does still offer the best options for individualized dosages when a patient cannot get relief with commercial options. Contact us with any questions!
